Are you confused on when to apply for Medicare?

The number one question I am asked is, “when do I apply for Medicare?”  In general everyone should consider the application process at least three months before their 65th birthday.

The next question I’m asked is, “how do I apply?”  There are several scenarios and I will explain each of them.  If you are collecting your social security retiree benefits before   you’re 65, you will automatically be enrolled into Medicare Parts A and B on the month you turn 65.  In Hawaii, most people don’t do that because they continue to work past age 65 so they delay their social security retiree benefits.  In that case, you will have to go through the steps to apply for Medicare.  Your three options are: a) apply online at the social security website, b) schedule a phone interview with the social security office, and c) schedule an in person interview at the social security office.  Keep in mind that due to Covid-19, the in person interview is not an option because the social security offices are closed.

Although that is a very simplified explanation, it should give you a general idea of how to go about applying for Medicare.  If you need help, please feel free to contact one of our agents.  We will gladly assist you through the entire process and best of all, there is no charge to help you.
