Medicare Supplement, is it right for you?

Medicare Advantage is the most popular type of plan in Hawaii. In my previous blog post I talked about why it is so attractive to locals. There is another type of Medicare coverage that you should familiarize yourself with and it may actually be better depending on your situation. That plan is called Medicare Supplement otherwise known as Medigap.

The beauty of Medicare Supplement plans are that it is dual coverage. Original Medicare is your primary and the supplement is your secondary. This is not the case when you have a Medicare Advantage plan. The other benefit is that there is no network when you have a Medicare Supplement. You can receive services anywhere in the United States as long as the the provider will accept the Medicare assignment.

There are different plans such as A, C, F, G, K, and N to name a few. The Cadillac plan of supplements is F but unless you were eligible for Medicare before 2020, you won’t be able to sign up for that plan. If you were, then F would be a good option because you would have no copayments for Medicare covered services. Your only cost would be the premium of the plan.

The one downside of a Medicare Supplement is that current plans do not cover your prescription drugs. You will be required to purchase a separate Medicare prescription drug plan. This is opposite from Medicare Advantage since most plans include drug coverage.
